Vaidyanath Dham is one among the twelve Jyotirlinga found in India. This Jyotirlinga is located in the Deoghar district of Jharkhand province. It has great fame in both scriptures and folk. Regarding its establishment, this story is said that once the demon king Ravana went to the Himalayas and did severe penance to get the darshan of Lord Shiva.

He cut his head he one by one and started offering them to Shivling. Thus, he cut off his nine heads and offered them there. When he got ready to offer his tenth and final head, Lord Shiva appeared before him very pleased and satisfied. Holding the hand of Ravana, who was eager to cut his head, he stopped him from doing so. He also joined his nine heads as before and was very pleased and asked him to ask for a boon.

Ravana asked Lord Shiva as a bridegroom to take that linga to his capital Lanka. Shiva gave him this boon but with one condition. He said that you can carry it, but if you keep it somewhere along the way, it will become immovable there, then you will not be able to lift it. Ravana accepted this and took that Shivling and left for Lanka. On the way, he felt the need to make small doubts. He left that Shivling in the hand of an Ahir to clear the minor doubts. The Ahir felt that the weight of the Shivling was too much and he was compelled to put it there on the ground.
