Step-1

Know How smoking can damage your health and future and why it is better to quit smoking

National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India identified health impacts due to consumption of tobacco and appeal to quit smoking as follows-

  • It causes premature death
  • Mortality due to tobacco in India is estimated at upwards of 1.3 million.
  • One million deaths are attributed to tobacco smoking.
    ICMR reports that the risk of diseases attributable to tobacco use was-
  • Stroke (78%)
  • Tuberculosis (65.6%)
  • Ischemic heart disease (85.2%)
  • Acute myocardial infarction (52%)
  • Esophageal cancer (43%)
  • Oral cancer (38%)
  • Lung cancer (16%)

US federal agency Center for Disease and Control finds the following-

  • Cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body
  • causes many diseases, and reduces the health of smokers in
  • general
  • Quitting smoking lowers your risk for smoking-related diseases and can add years to your life
  • Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States

Australian Government’s health department finds the result of smoking and appeal to quit smoking as follows –

  • Lung Cancers
  • Breathing problems and chronic respiratory conditions (COPD)
  • Heart disease, stroke, and blood circulation problems
  • Diabetes
  • Increased risk of Infections
  • Dental problems
  • Hearing loss
  • Vision loss
  • Fertility problems
  • Osteoporosis and menopause

Other problems a smoker invites are creating a health risk for the people around him/her by way of passive smoking. Also, smoking is expensive and has financial effects.

Step-2

Know Act introduced by the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to control tobacco products is 

  • The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 or COTPA, 2003 is an
    Act of Parliament of India to prohibit the advertisement of and provide for
    the regulation of trade and commerce in and production, supply, and
    distribution of cigarettes and other tobacco products in India

Step- 3

Decide in favor of NO SMOKING

  • Now you are aware of the danger of smoking cigarettes
  • Think of the provable trouble of your dependent dear ones for any
    future health issues due to smoking
  • Decide to set an example for your kids whom you do not want to see
    addicted at
    present or in the future
  • Think how your addiction to smoking cigarettes stressed your monthly
    budget
  • Determined to quit smoking cigarette

Step- 4

Determine to quit cigarettes

  • Do not live with the illusion that you are not addicted to smoking cigarettes
  • Think of your past achievements and the role of your will power for your
    success
  • You know for sure that you can do it again
  • Discuss your plan of Quitting Smoking only with your close family
    members who may be worried about your health
  • Do not discuss your plan with persons who are smokers
  • Quit smoking without making any schedule or announcement
  • Only your conviction will bring success

Step- 5

Handle boldly the obvious craving symptoms

  • Chew candy or take anise to manage uneasiness for a few days
  • Keep yourself busy till you go to bed
  • Feel proud of your decision of No Smoking
  • Craving symptoms will go within a month
  • Remain cautious now, do not touch cigarettes anymore
  • Overconfidence will bring you again where you were one month before
  • Be careful until you start hating the smell of cigarettes smoke

Step- 6

Talk with people who are ready to quit or ex-smoker

  • Live examples always inspire, so talk with ex-smokers to know their experience
    of handling cravings

    like-minded persons
  • Share your experience during your journey towards quitting in our

Step- 7

Set a short time goal, then increase it gradually

  • Set a small target time of say, one month initially and stop smoking
  • Stay Committed
  • You will have to tackle cravings
  • You will be under the lens of both of those who want or do not want to you
    see successful
  • Once you touch your first target time feel proud and extend the target
    for another month
  • Now both cravings and curiosity among people around you will be less
  • The biggest problem now is the false confidence of achiever
  • False confidence may provoke you for a one puff challenge and land you
    at the starting point
  • Do not touch cigarettes

Step- 8

Be happy for your success

  • You have every right to be happy every time you reached your set target time
  • But never be overconfident that you are out from addiction until you
    start hating cigarette smoke

Step- 9

You are now sure you are a non-smoker

  • If you have not smoked for the last twelve to fifteen months, you are a non-smoker
  • Do not forget difficulties to becoming a non-smoker
  • Do not forget your non-smoker status is not permanent
  • Pseudo smartness may spoil the whole game and may very soon reverse your status
  • Being a non-smoker, you are qualified to encourage others to become a non-smoker
