Introduction:

Have we ever heard anybody saying that smoking cigarette is good for health? No. But everybody says that it is bad for health. But what is bad about it? It is the presence of Nicotiana Tabacum that is Nicotine in it. Tobacco has relationships with nicotine. The nicotiana tabacum or nicotine contained in tobacco causes all the herm to a smoker. The presence of nicotine in a cigarette adds a pleasure factor in smoke and smoker feel dependent on nicotine addiction.

The principal raw material used in a cigarette is tobacco. Whatever bad or good a cigarette has in its character, is mostly influenced by tobacco.

 

Tobacco is an important cash crop of India. It grows on 0.4 million hectares in the country. It accounts for approximately 0.27% of the net cultivated area of India and is the third on the world production map, growing 800 M kg of Tobacco. Tobacco can be divided into six broad important types. They are FCV tobacco (Flue-Cured Virginia Tobacco), Country Tobacco, Burley Tobacco, Bidi Tobacco, Rustica Tobacco, and Chewing Tobacco.

India is the fourth largest exporter of unmanufactured Tobacco. Our export earnings for the year 2019-20 was Rs. 5969.59 crores.

THE TYPE OF TOBACCO AND ITS (Nicotiana) NICOTINE CONTAINS

Type of Tobacco: Flue-Cured Virginia Tobacco

Type of soil: Karnataka Light Soil (Mysore)

The regions where grow: Karnataka

Characteristics: Premium Neutral filler tobaccos. Preferred for its low nicotine, high filling capacity, and its suitability to blend well with any tobacco

Nicotine contains (in %): 1.5 – 1.8

Type of Tobacco: Flue-Cured Virginia Tobacco

Type of soil: Southern Light Soil (SLS)

The regions where grow: Andhra Pradesh

Characteristics: FCV tobacco is neutral and blends well with any tobacco. Excellent aging properties FCV tobacco is grown on medium textured red soils

Nicotine contains (in %): 1.0 to 1.5

Type of soil: Northern  Light Soil (NLS)

The regions where grow: Andhra Pradesh

Characteristics: Flavorful to Semi- Flavorful tobaccos. Excellent aging properties

Type of soil: Light Soil East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh

Characteristics: Used for Blending in Cigarettes

Characteristics: Apart from Blending in Cigarettes used in Pipe Mixtures, Chewing Plugs and Hookah paste

Nicotine contains (in %): 2.0 to 4.5

Type of soil: East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh

Characteristics: Flavorful Tobacco used in Cigarette blending

Type of soil: Many districts of Andhra Pradesh

The regions where grow: Andhra Pradesh

Characteristics: Mainly used for Cheroots, Snuff, Pipe Tobacco, Cigarette Blending and Hookah Paste

Nicotine contains (in %): 3.0 – 5.5


Type of Tobacco: BEEDI TOBACCO

Type of soil: Charotar at middle Gujarat. Also, in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka

The regions where grow: Gujrat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka

Characteristics: Used in the manufacture of Beedi, a hand-rolled smoking product made by wrapping tobacco with natural ebony leave

Nicotine contains (in %): 6.0

Type of Tobacco: CHEWING TOBACCO –Rustica

Type of soil: Uttar Pradesh: rainfall of about 900 mm. In Gujrat: Sabarkanta, Banaskanta , Nadiad, Kambat, Mehsana and Anand

The regions where grow: Uttar Pradesh, Gujrat, West Bengal (Motihari)

Characteristics: Used in the manufacture of Khaini

Nicotine contains (in %): 3.0-6.0

Summary:

  • Different types of tobacco have different quantities of Nicotiana or Nicotine in it.
  • Low Nicotine, high flavor tobacco is costlier.
  • To arrive at a predetermined end cost price of a cigarette, different grades of tobacco blended in a specific quantity. The process  called the Blending of tobacco.
  • Nicotine contained considered during blending of tobacco
  • Nicotiana tabacum or Nicotine (C10H14N2 ) is an organic chemical substance, and that gives strength to a cigarette.
  • Nicotine causes addiction, gives satisfaction to a smoker.
  • Popular believe that Bidi is less harmful than a cigarette. Bidi and Khaini tobacco contains more nicotine.

Now you may question, ‘are nicotine-free cigarettes safe?’. The answer is ‘you will not smoke if there is no nicotine in cigarettes.
