atha cet tvam imam dharmyam
sangramam na karisyasi
tatah sva-dharmam kirtim ca
hitva papam avapsyasi
If you deny fighting a religious war, then it will be a sin for neglecting your duties. You will lose your good name as a fighter.
Arjuna was a great fighter, and he acquired fame by fighting many great demigods including Lord Siva. Arjuna fought and defeated Lord Siva in the dress of a hunter, Arjuna pleased the Lord and received a prized weapon named pasupata-astra. It was known to everyone that he was a great warrior. Even Dronacarya was so pleased with him that he gave him blessings. Dronacarya gave him a special weapon that could kill him. So, he was credited with so many military certificates from many authorities, including heavenly king Indra, his adopted father. Denying the battle means neglecting his obligation, his duty as a Kshatriya. That could lead to losing all his fame and good name and could prepare him for a way to hell. Alternatively, he would go to hell, not by fighting, but by withdrawing from battle.
akirtim capi bhutani
kathayisyanti te ‘vyayam
People will talk about your bad public reputation, and you will no longer honor but will dishonor. That will be worse than death.

bhayad ranad uparatam
mamsyante tvam maha-rathah
yesam ca tvam bahu-mato
bhutva yasyasi laghavam
The great generals have been highly esteemed about your talent. You will be misjudged if you deny fighting. They will think that you have left the battlefield out of fear only. They will consider you a coward.
Lord Krsna told Arjuna that he should not think that the great generals like Duryodhana, Karna, and others will think that Arjuna has left the battleground out of fear for his life and they will not understand that he left the battleground out of sympathy for his brothers and grandfather and teacher. This will shatter his reputation as a warrior.
avacya-vadams ca bahun
nindantas tava samarthyam
tato duhkhataram nu kim
Enemies on your opposite side will call you bad words and neglect your ability. This will be very much unacceptable for you.
Lord Krsna was astonished in the beginning at Arjuna’s unnecessary plea for sympathy, and He described his sympathy as befitting the non-Aryans. Now in so many words, He has established His point against Arjuna’s so-called sympathy.
hato va prapsyasi svargam
jitva va bhoksyase mahim
tasmad uttistha kaunteya
O son of Kunti, if you be killed on the battlefield, you will attain the heavenly planets. On the other hand, if you win will then enjoy the earthly kingdom. Therefore, charged yourself to fight with determination.
Even if Arjuna dies fighting, he has to fight, and only then he could be elevated into the heavenly planets.
sukha-duhkhe same krtva
tato yuddhaya yujyasva
naivam papam avapsyasi
Do thou fight for the sake of fighting, without considering anything extra, and, by so doing, you shall never incur sin, even if you lose in the battle.
Lord Krsna now at once says that Arjuna has to fight for the sake of fighting due to the fact He desires the battle. Krsna consciousness does not deal with happiness or distress, profit or gain, victory or defeat. That the whole thing has to be done for the sake of Krsna is transcendental consciousness; so there may be no response to material activities. He who acts for his personal sense of gratification, both in goodness or in passion, is subject to the response, good or bad. But he who has absolutely surrendered himself withinside the activities of Krsna consciousness is not obliged to anyone, neither is he a debtor to anyone, as one is in the normal route of activities.
