Mother Sati did not like this thing right. She went to attend the Yagya without being called. Lord Shiva was insulted at the place of Yagya, which Mother Sati could not bear, and jumped into the Havan Kund there.

When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he reached there and took out the body of Mother Sati from the havankund and started doing tandav, due to which there was upheaval in the whole universe. To save the entire universe from this crisis, Lord Vishnu divided the body of Mother Sati into 51 parts with his Sudarshan Chakra, the parts where they fell became Shakti Peeths.
